Essential Oils - Uses
Essential Oils Information

Essential Oils can be diffused for environmental fragrance, disinfection or psychological effect, inhaled directly for expectoration, decongestion, respiratory disinfection or psychological effect and by topical application (massage, baths, compresses, salves) for physiological and psychological benefit.

Vaporisers, room burners or electric diffusers are the most common way to create a beautiful atmosphere, scent your home or disinfect a room. Simply add 8-15 drops of essential oil to a vaporiser receptacle along with water, using a tea light to gently heat and diffuse the essential oil into the environment. Ideally your vaporiser will have a large top reservoir to avoid constantly topping it up, as the reservoir should not become dry to avoid spatters. Ensure your vaporiser is placed on a heat-proof stand away from draughts and do not leave the candle unattended for a long period of time. Alternatively, use an electric aromatherapy burner for ease of use.

Steam inhalation involves using a large heatproof bowl and a thick bath towel to inhale steam infused with essential oils. Simply place a bowl onto a solid surface and fill with boiling or almost boiling water. Begin by adding 3-6 drops of your chosen essential oil. As that dissolves, add two more drops and then again, to a total of 6 drops.

Using a towel to seal off vapours, lean over the bowl and inhale the steam. Breath in slowly and quietly for 1-5 minutes. The process of direct inhalation of essential oils provides a strong anti-bacterial, anti-viral and soothing effects, making it especially suited to treating colds, flus, sinus congestion and bronchial complaints.

Splash your face afterwards with cold water if you wish to experience a skin tingling mini-sauna.

Baths are one of the easiest and most pleasurable ways to enjoy using essential oils, leaving your body, mind and spirit feeling refreshed. Simply add 10 drops in a tablespoon of carrier oil (such as Miessence Massage Oil or even olive, safflower or grapeseed oil will suffice) into a warm to very warm bath and mix in. Soak for at least 10 minutes to gain maximum benefit.

After your bath you may wish to make up a lovely massage blend to prolong the benefits of the bath and to nourish and moisturise your skin.

Room and linen fresheners using essential oils are a therapeutic and safe way to fragrance or disinfect your home. Add equal amounts of purified or filtered water and high proof vodka to a MiEnviron spray bottle, leaving enough room to shake the bottle. Add 20-40 drops of essential oils and shake vigorously before use. The spray can also be used on bedsheets and pillows, although it should not be sprayed on polished furniture as some essential oils can damage polished furniture.

Household use of essential oils include adding essential oils to your vacuum cleaner, dusting cloths, washing machine or potpourri, either to scent or disinfect.

Compresses can be made from essential oils by filling a bowl with warm water, adding 2-6 drops of the required essential oil and stirring well. Then take a soft cloth, soak it thoroughly, wring and place on the affected body part. Repeat the procedure until relief is obtained. Do not get the fluid in your eyes, nose or mouth.

Skin care with essential oils involves adding 6-8 drops into 2 teaspoons of your carrier oil or moisturiser. Essential oils are highly concentrated so should not be used neat on skin. However, Lavender and Tea Tree can be used neat to treat cuts and minor burns, and insect bites, cuts and scrapes respectively.
